Project Based Learning Video

      Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Essential Elements of PBL include:  Time Management, Collaboration, Goal Setting and Reflection, Creativity and Innovation, Cultural Competence, Communication, Critical Thinking, Individual Work Ethic, Ongoing Self and Peer Evaluation, Inquiry, Revision, Curiosity, Written and Oral Communication and Teamwork. Throughout the year there will be several opportunities for the CMS Community to be involved in this exciting process through Student Showcase Nights, where students deliver their presentations. Students must dress formal during Student Showcase Nights.

Grading Policy
Deliverables: 30% 
Assessment (test and quizzes): 30%
Collaboration (working with others): 15%
Presentation (Delivery of outputs): 15%
Daily Tasks (can include class work, homework, reading): 10%

Attendance is extremely important to ALL areas of PBL. Poor attendance will affect students ability to successfully collaborate with peers.
  1. Students must be at and present at all Exhibition Days, whether it’s during the day, evening, or both.
  2. Students must always look professional during Exhibition Days. Boys must wear a Suit & Tie with Black Shoes. Girls must wear a dress (heels are optional, but flats are needed).
Standards covered in PBL:
  • Reading Informational Text (RI 8.1, 8.9)
  • Informative/Explanatory Writing (W 8.2, 8.6,  8.7)
  • Speaking & Listening: collaboration, comprehension, evaluate presented information, etc. (8.1-8.6)
  • Reading History (RH 6-8.2)
There will be a PBL Night where staff will be explaining what Project Based Learning is.
